This is Dr. Donless Reinhardt. I would like to take this opportunity to discuss brass instrument cupped mouthpieces. First of all, a mouthpiece consists of five basic components. One, the rim. Two, the cup. Three, the shoulder, which is rarely ever mentioned and very important. The throat, which is the hole, so to speak. And the backbore. All five factors contribute to a net result, assuming that it fits into the leader pipe of the instrument…
